Our HomeKit series continues on from thermostats, this time with cameras. While there are many smart cameras on the market these days, dominated by Ring and Nest, there is currently only one camera that is compatible with HomeKit. And that offering comes from D-Link of all places. Keep in mind, there are many cameras that have apps designed to work on iOS, but Apple only certifies certain products with the “Works with Apple HomeKit” logo. So while you can use other products with your iPhone, only this D-Link product will integrate into the Home app. This makes this article a rather short, and perhaps poignant article.
D-Link Omna 180 Cam
The biggest benefit one gets from having HomeKit integration, is allowing the camera to interact with scenes. The D-Link Omna 180 Cam is able to detect motion, and from that trigger events. This can sending you notifications (with pictures) to your lock screen, as well as turning on lights, or whatever else you’d like.
The camera itself provides a full HF 1080p picture, and the lens allows you to see a full 180 degrees, which means you can capture a whole room with just one camera. Built-in night vision (thanks to infra-red LEDs) also allows you to see up to 16′ in the dark. This is all packed into a small grey cylinder, 5″ high, with a 2.3″ diameter.
While under normal conditions you can view a livestream of your house, as well as communicate with people in your house thanks to the speaker and microphone the camera sports, recording of clips requires a micro-SD card to be purchased. This is great for many who don’t enjoy the competition’s cloud based options, often requiring monthly subscriptions. All communication is protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring you’re the only one to see what’s going on in your house.
Customer reviews vary quite a bit, but mostly complaints aren’t with the functioning of the camera, but with it’s capabilities. If you fully understand what the camera does and feel it suits your needs, purchase it, as it’s a well made product, they does what it says. If there is functionality that you want, get something else, as you’re not going to like it.
Automation Haus Verdict
So if you’re looking for the best Apple HomeKit Camera, you don’t have to do much research. Unfortunately the small pool to choose from makes this product both the best and worst HomeKit camera. Overall the D-Link Omna 180 Cam is a pretty good option if you really want HomeKit integration. If not, maybe you’d be happy with a Nest Indoor Security Camera or Netgear Arlo.
The camera is currently only available from the Apple Store for $200.
